Hello L, as I was reading your comment you made a point about assuming things but that is exactly what you did. He stated that he was checking for an uber, but you made all kinds of assumptions about the conversations he was having or about how the writer’s perception was biased since he doesn’t reside in the US. If the bus was full of strangers why would you assume the “black folks just didn’t like the guy and he knew better than to ask"? How would he know that? And if you have no bias, then why would such a scenario even occur to you? It has been my observation that white people often give other white people the benefit of the doubt, trying to justify or explain away others behavior when racism or bias is involved. You assumed that the writer left out details or failed to try to make the scenario something other than it was. And when you say you know racism in the context it was written implied that the writer does night. Acts of racism and bias dont have to be overt to have an impact and oftentimes it is exactly what it appears to be. And dont forget that hate too plays a part in racism, not just fear. And ignorance is a choice in these matters.
